Congrats to Carmen and the team identified CDK6 as a crucial driver of lenvatinib resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma using a chemical biology approach in collaboration with Dr. Zhao Qian. We identify a noncanonical pathway of CDK6 in which it binds and regulates the activity of GSK3β, leading to activation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling.

6 January 2023– Our research project was funded by RGC Research Impact Fund (RIF) 2022/23

The project led by Prof. Terence LEE entitled “A novel approach to target cancer stemness using peptidic chimeric antigen receptor (pCAR) macrophages was awarded RGC Research Impact Fund (RIF) 2022/23. 20 October 2022 –Congrats to Dr. Mok! For acquisition of Outstanding PhD Thesis Award 2021/22

Dr. MOK’s research focuses on the understanding of the molecular mechanism for the development of acquired resistance to multiple-kinase inhibitors in liver cancer. His winning thesis, entitled “Cholesterol biosynthesis: A critical determinant of cancer stemness and drug resistance in hepatocellular carcinoma?” covered the original work on the identification of the potential therapeutic approaches for improving cancer treatment via targeting cholesterol biosynthesis in liver cancer cells.

3 October 2022– Our new research article in JHEP Reports!  

Congrats to Martina, Carmen, Eunice and the team uncovered for the new role of a pseudokinase, SCY1-like pseudokinase 3 (SCYL3) in HCC via novel binding to a metastatic protein, ROCK2. This study provides a new understanding on the role of pseudokinase in HCC progression.

11 June 2022– Our new research article in Cancer Research! 
Congrats to Etienne, Carmen and the team uncovered for the first time that cholesterol biosynthesis supports the expansion of cancer stem cell populations to drive resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy in hepatocellular carcinoma, identifying potential therapeutic approaches for improving cancer treatment. We interestingly found that Caspase-3, an apoptotic gene,  plays a dominant mechanism in driving SREBP2-mediated therapeutic resistance.

Congrats to Mark and the team on uncovering the role of SCD1 in mediating ER stress regulated liver tumor-initiating cells and sorafenib sensitivity. With this finding, targeting SCD1 alone or in combination with sorafenib may represent a novel personalized medicine against HCC.
